Pros & Cons of Teeth Whitening

Despite the increasing popularity of teeth whitening, there remain a number of misconceptions concerning the various methods, so Dentistry in Streetsville is pleased to provide the following information about the pros and cons of tooth whitening methods.
The two main categories of teeth whitening are the procedures that are conducted by your dentist at the dental office and the various methods of at-home whitening.
Teeth Whitening By Your Dentist
The method used in our clinic by our hygienists involves a bleaching solution. The fundamental benefits of this are that the procedure is conducted by a dental professional with an expert understanding of human dentition, as well as having detailed knowledge about any associated risks to you specifically. In some cases, our dental clinic might employ light or heat to quicken and enhance the whitening process. A potential downside of bleaching is that this method can increase tooth and, possibly, gum sensitivity. But any gum and tissue irritation is generally due to the fitting of the bleaching tray, and such tooth and gum sensitivity is normally temporary. The results tend to speak for themselves: Whitening results are often several shades brighter than those of the at-home methods.
At- Home Teeth Whitening Options
Whitening toothpastes: This is perhaps the most readily available method of at-home teeth whitening. The market now presents consumers with a wide range of leading brand toothpastes that offer whitening. Such toothpastes tend to be somewhat abrasive and can help reduce or remove stains. Some of these toothpastes also contain special polishing agents (but no bleach). The cost is inexpensive, and the products are easy to find. But results are likely restricted compared to other stronger methods, as the bleach concentration is inadequate.
Whitening strips: Tooth whitening strips are thin, peroxide-treated bleaching strips that are applied to the surface of the tooth. Again, such products are readily available on the market. The recommended treatment is generally once or twice daily over a 10- to 14-day period - but instructions may vary based on a specific product. Since whitening strips are commercially produced and not custom-made, they can slip or fall off and, in some cases, can then cause irritation to the gums and soft tissues. The bleach concentration is again inadequate.
Bleach trays: At-home dental bleach trays are perhaps the gentlest effective form of bleaching offered in our dental office. This method involves having our hygienists create custom-made bleach trays that are very much like mouth guards. The tray - which contains a type of bleaching agent - is placed over the teeth for a recommended time (possibly one or more hours per day) over a specified time frame. This is far more effective than commercial over-the-counter versions.
As with any dental procedure, the best approach to teeth whitening is to consult with our clinic that specializes in whitening.
