Parents who have young children tend to want to know which teeth grow in first and at what ages - a question that Dentistry in Streetsville in Mississauga is pleased to answer.

By the time your infant is two to three years old, the full number of 20 primary teeth (baby teeth) will have grown in. The actual time when teeth grow in or fall out often varies - and there are certain age timelines for each type of tooth. As well, teeth tend to appear symmetrically (on the left and right) at the same time. There are five types of primary teeth: central incisors, lateral incisors, canines, first molars and second molars. The age ranges for the appearance of types of primary teeth are as follows.

Upper Teeth

  • Central incisor: Appears at eight to 12 months and is lost at six to seven years.

  • Lateral incisor: Appears at nine to 13 months and is lost at seven to eight years.

  • Canine (cuspid): Appears at 16 to 22 months and is lost at 10 to 12 years.

  • First molar: Appears at 13 to 19 months and is lost at nine to 11 years.

  • Second molar: Appears at 25 to 33 months and is lost at 10 to 12 years.

Lower Teeth

  • Central incisor: Appears at six to 10 months and is lost at six to seven years.

  • Lateral incisor: Appears at 10 to 16 months and is lost at seven to eight years.

  • Canine (cuspid): Appears at 17 to 23 months, and is lost at nine to 12 years.

  • First molar: Appears at 14 to 18 months, and is lost at nine to 11 years.

  • Second molar: Appears at 23 to 31 months, and is lost at 10 to 12 years.

Permanent teeth begin to make their appearance by age six or seven. Generally known as “first permanent molars,” these teeth come in at the back of the mouth behind the last primary teeth. They do not replace any primary teeth. As you’ll note in the above list, children begin to lose their primary teeth at about age six and will generally continue to lose them till about age 12.
